Application: | Gadolinium is a transition rare earth metal, silver white, moderate ductility, and slowly reacts with oxygen and water. It is ferromagnetic below 17°C and superconducting at very low temperatures. Gadolinium and other rare earth elements coexist in many ores, but they are mainly extracted from Chemicalbook monazite. Gadolinium can be used in some electronic components and high temperature resistant materials, and can be used as alloy additives. Gadolinium has the highest absorption cross-section of thermal neutrons released by any natural isotope of all elements, so it can be used in nuclear reactor control rods. |
